Who is Holly Orahem? Part 1

The easy answer to that question is that I'm a massage therapist. But does that really tell you who I am as a person? Not really... I'd love to give you all a little more insight into who you're working with when seeing me for massage, receiving sound healing, participating in one of my retreats, or collaborating on some other event. Over the next 4 weeks, I'll dive deeper into why I became a massage therapist, why I'm expanding my business into hosting retreats, where I'm at in life currently, and where my future may be headed. Before I get into that though, I just want to say:

Hey! I'm Holly! And it's so nice to meet you! I look forward to seeing where our paths lead and how I can help!

WHY MASSAGE THERAPY?

Here's a better question, why not massage therapy?! For an introvert like me, you get to work one-on-one with clients, there's often a lot of quiet time, stress is minimal, the money is decent, and being self-employed offers advantages with taking time off and work/life balance. Best of all, you're helping people!

I may not have known all that when I started, though. All I knew was that I was drawn to the profession. I had wanted to do it for a long time before I actually started.

I was a dancer in my younger life. My dream would have been to dance in the New York City Ballet (insert dreamy emoji here!). Unfortunately, my ankle decided that wasn't going to happen and two surgeries later, I need to find something else to do with my life.

As a dancer, I knew how good massage was for the body. I was drawn to the way it helped prevent injury, but also the way it helps to reduce stress and actually makes you slow down and be in the moment. Isn't that what we all need? How amazing to think that I could provide that for someone.

Not everyone in my life thought that being a massage therapist was a good idea. I was expected to go get a degree and have a stable 9-5 job just like everyone else. I also dated people who said it wasn't a good idea because they wouldn't want me to work on men. I can't roll my eyes big enough at that. Alas, I went into finance and hated my job for the next 15 years.

In 2012, I was married for one year and complaining, yet again, about my job. (Okay, it wasn't all bad - I have worked with some wonderful people and have had some great bosses - It just wasn't my calling in life.) My husband asked me if I wanted to go back to school for massage and follow that dream. And I did! I graduated from National University of Health Sciences in 2013 and in April of 2014 I got my license.

It has been over 10 years now and I've loved every second. I did massage part time for a long while because I was unsure about giving up the stable paycheck and relying on myself. I wish I had made the jump sooner, but here I am and I couldn't be happier!

Every client I've had has played a part in my story. Whether someone is looking to relax, to recover from an injury, prevent one, or something in between, I'm here to give an experience they'll keep wanting to come back to.

Book a massage with me today! :-)
